This is the Tokyo version of an exhibition originally held at Grandtoit in Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture.
The exhibition is presented as a dialogue among three figures: the Blue Ogre (representing reality), the Red Ogre (representing imagination and ideals), and a Ghost (representing others).
Beginning with projects from the architect’s student years and continuing through the struggles and failures of the early years after establishing an independent practice, the exhibition traces the journey to the present day through the interplay of ideals, reality, and the perspectives of others.
I imagine that there must have been many internal conflicts and discussions with those around him along the way. As I viewed the exhibition, I felt grateful for the courage it took to openly reflect on that journey from today’s perspective, as well as for the encouragement and challenge it offers to younger generations.
I had heard about it before, but completing the Makino Botanical Garden entirely with hand-drawn drawings truly seems almost beyond belief.
